Online searching course (advanced)

This one-day practical course will look at tools to aid problem-solving for literature searching, including the application of search filters in Medline for evidence-based clinical practice and research.

Who is it for?
Doctors seeking evidence-based information for use in clinical practice
Librarians with basic online searching skills wishing to look at healthcare-specific strategies.
It is recommended that attendees should have completed the basic Online searching course.

Objectives
To review the Medline tools that can be used to broaden or narrow searches;
To introduce the function and application of search filters;
To explore the reasons for using tools and filters to devise search strategies for different purposes.

Topics to be covered:
Tools for sensitive searching
Tools for precise searching
Getting the right balance between sensitivity and precision
Types of filter.

We will assume you:
  • understand the structure and scope of MEDLINE
  • are familiar with searching MEDLINE via the Ovid interface (for example as a personal or institutional member of the BMA with access to the Library’s MEDLINE Plus service).
Location and times: BMA House, Tavistock Square, London, WC1H 9JP.
Registration 9.00am; start 9.30am; end 4.30pm.

Cost: £160 +VAT(£188) (members); £320 +VAT(£376) (non-members). Lunch included.
