Email your local politician about the loss of free accommodation for first year junior doctors

July 2008
The BMA is encouraging medical students and junior doctors to contact their local politicians about the loss of free accommodation for new first year junior doctors.

The aim is to draw this to politicians' attention so they recognise the effect it has on new first year junior doctors that will have graduated with substantial debt and to highlight the need for solutions to be negotiated between the relevant bodies and the BMA. MPs have tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in the Westminster Parliament expressing support for the BMA’s campaign.

See if your MP has signed EDM 1619 at http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=35897&SESSION=891

To find out who your MP is, please go to http://www.parliament.uk/directories/hciolists/alms.cfm

Please note that some MPs are unable to sign EDMs if they hold a Government position such as Minister, Parliamentary Private Secretary or Whip for example.

A number of MPs have written to Ann Keen MP, the minister in charge of this issue at the Department of Health England, and we are disappointed to find that, although many MPs remain very supportive of our campaign, the Department of Health continues to put forward spurious and misleading arguments. Therefore, the BMA has prepared a full rebuttal available at http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/accomrebuttal

What you can do – take action
You can email your local politician in only a few moments. We have written template emails for you but feel free to put the message in your own words to reflect your own particular experiences or concerns.
