Press release issued 4 July 2003

Following a meeting with the Secretary of State for Health, John Reid, today, the Chairman of the BMA Central Consultants and Specialists Committee (CCSC), Dr Paul Miller made the following statement:

“I am pleased to say that we have had a constructive meeting with the Health Secretary. What is clear is that both sides want to reach agreement and this is an excellent starting point.

"Talks will begin early next week in an attempt to resolve the differences between us.

"We are ready and willing to work with the Government to develop a contract that is good for patients, the health service and doctors. We understand that give and take is needed from both sides.”
