Revalidation for salaried and freelance GPs: Update

September 2006

Revalidation is currently on hold following the 5th Shipman Report by Dame Janet Smith. The government has decided to review the General Medical Council's (GMC's) proposed new system of revalidation and it is not yet known when the process (or revised process) will commence.

The GMC had previously suggested that doctors would need to revalidate every five years, that full participation in the NHS annual appraisal process would be a powerful indicator of a doctor’s current fitness to practice although GPs would also be able to revalidate by an independent route.

The BMA is working with the GMC on the review of the revalidation process.

In the meantime we recommend that salaried and freelance GPs prepare and retain annual personal development plans, as well as details of continuing professional development, significant tasks and work undertaken.
