Rural proofing the GMS contract report
September 2006
The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) recently commissioned the Institute for Rural Health (IRH) to undertake research concerning the new general medical services (GMS) contract and its impact upon rural general practice.
Researchers from the Institute found that the contract has the potential to improve healthcare for patients and working conditions for GPs in rural areas. The IRH rural proofed the new GMS contract on behalf of the General Practitioners’ Defence Fund. Its report recommends that the BMA, General Practitioners Committee and others support further research into the cost of delivering services in rural areas, with attention being paid to emerging evidence on rural issues from expert groups across the UK.
